Defending Atlantic Champions win opener

The St. John's Capitals coming off their first Junior League Championship in Newfoundland in a number of years did not start the way hometown fans were anticipating at this year's 23-24 Don Johnson Memorial Cup in Mount Pearl.  After losing to the host Blades 5-2 in the tournament opener Tuesday evening, the Capitals were bushwacked 8-0 by the defending Atlantic Champions from Antigonish N.S. by an 8-0 count Wednesday afternoon.

The Caps were desperately outplayed despite holding the Bulldogs scoreless in the opening period as they were outshot 61-19.  The Bulldogs put everything into high gear in the second period scoring five times as Venel Campbell, the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League Playoff MVP scored twice including a power-play marker.  His first came only 0.51 seconds to start the middle period.  Logan McGrtah made it 2-0 Bulldogs and then Campbell scored on the power-play.  Nick Marshall who scored the series clinching goal in double overtime a week ago in Bridgewater for the Bulldogs to secure the Nova Scotia Championship in six games made it 4-0 before Owen Juurlink with only 18 seconds remaining in the middle period made it 5-0 Antigonish.

The Bulldogs did not slow down after taking the 5-0 lead as Owen Forsythe, Ethan Twolan and Marshall with his second of the game tallied to make the final 8-0. The Bulldogs are 1-0-0 and are watching the game presently being played between the host Mt. Pearl Blades and Kensington Vipers from P.E.I. who were both 1-0-0 entering Wednesday night's game.
